Summary of Aims and Objectives of the
Carers Support Project

.

Aim of project

To enable people in Scotland who are carers/relatives of people diagnosed as having schizophrenia to access information, education and networks of self-help and mutual support.

Objectives

  1. To further develop NSF(S) existing information, education and support services to individual carers and to NSF(Scotland)'s self-help groups.
  2. To promote and support the establishment of information, education and mutual support networks for carers/relatives in areas where no such NSF(S) services currently exist.

Desired Outcomes

People benefiting from the project will be able to:
  1. Better understand the nature of schizophrenia, and associated issues (e.g. effects of medication, mental health legislation, community care provision)
  2. Make contact with a mutual support network
  3. Benefit more from services provided by NSF(Scotland), and other agencies (e.g. information and advice)
  4. Self advocate, and advocate on behalf of family members (when appropriate), with greater confidence.

Possible Service Developments

Specific services will be tailored to needs of both people and the areas worked in. They will be developed after discussion with carers, families and professionals working in each area. The following include initial suggestions made by carers and existing carers' support projects:
