Some of those attending the Highland Conference in May 1999 at the official launch of the Carers Pack

Printed in the new blue and green NSF (Scotland) livery, this key publication for new carers consists of six fact sheets of basic information for the family and friends of people who are experiencing a schizophrenic or similar mental illness.

If you require a copy from National Office, it would help if you could send a self-addressed envelope with a 44p stamp (at current rates) to keep our costs down. The contact details for National Office are on the Home Page of this site. Alternatively email us at [email protected]. These packs are also available from Carers Support Project Offices and other Project Offices throughout Scotland.

Contents of the Carers Information Pack
Fact Sheet One introduces the carer to NSF(S), its values and activities, including the information and advice and the services on offer to both carers and users.

Fact Sheet Two provides an explanation of what schizophrenia is and what the signs and symptoms are. In addition, it covers two questions frequently posed by carers: What causes schizophrenia? And - Is there a cure for it?

Fact Sheet Three covers the all-important issue of support and how to get it. Issues discussed are: information, health services, social work departments, carers and user support networks, and voluntary organisations.

Fact Sheet Four homes in on issues of treatment: it covers diagnosis and medication, as well as other non drug based forms of treatment, rehabilitation and self help support groups.

Fact Sheet Five explores a range of topics broadly relating to mental illness and the law: legal issues, carers rights, crisis support, detention, the rights of the nearest relative, community care assessment and consultation, and confidentiality.

Finally, Fact Sheet Six contains a list of contact numbers, including NSF(S) Carers' Officers. Also included is a list of NSF(S) publications and other recommended reading.
