Nobel Prize for Schizophrenia Research

Two of the three winners of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medecine made significant contributions to knowledge of schizophrenia.

The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Professors Arvid Carlsson, Paul Greengard and Eric Kandel on Monday 9 October 2000.

Professor Greengard, in the 1970s, revealed new information about the way the chemical dopamine affects the brain. He managed to trace the signalling pathways used by the chemical. His work has applications in the fight against many conditions to which dopamine is key, such as Parkinson's, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's.

Dr Arvid Carlsson, (University of Goteborg, Sweden) also studied dopamine.

His discoveries have led to new effective treatments for schizophrenia, depression and Parkinson's.

In the mid-1970s, Professor Kandel and his colleagues discovered the importance of the neurotransmitter called serotonin to the memory process.
