'During my teenage years and early twenties I suffered from drug abuse and chronic alcoholism. This resulted in a debilitating schizophrenic illness followed by depression. When I reached my thirties I decided to turn my life around. My concentration was poor and the medication created even more problems. However despite these obstacles I decided to try studying.

'The first subject I tried was GCSE Psychology with Carlisle College, distance learning. I wanted to help stimulate my brain. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed learning and how it improved my well being in all areas of my life. I then tried an Access Course with the Open University and I enjoyed the challenge which took me to degree level.

I also completed a two year counselling course which developed me personally and allowed me to go on and do voluntary work which is befriending someone with a mental illness. I also studied computing which allows me to type up reports and have other basic computer skills.

'I then decided to study at degree level and started with Social Science Level One Course. I am now studying Psychology Level Two and would like to now complete a degree in Psychology. At the same time as the open university I have also completed a module in Mental Health and Mental Illness. I am also taking part in paid work which involves interviewing patients about mental health services.

'Studying has made me believe in myself and given a new confidence. I now am ambitious and believe in the long term I will gain employment. I am now well on my way to recovery and now believe I have a future.'

Note
In May 2001, Jill Jackson received a prestigious Adult Learners' Award, one of only 18 award winners out of 1800 adult learners nominated for their achievements in overcoming personal difficulties and changing their lives through learning.
