In her speech to declare the publication launched, NSF(S) Vice Chairman
Oksana Last said:
I am delighted to be here today, and I thank you for inviting me to this special occasion.
The work of the Projects and Groups across the country is central to the success of National Schizophrenia Fellowship (Scotland) and it is a particular pleasure to see this initiative come to fruition.
The booklet, Understanding Voices - A guide for relatives and friends, has been produced as a direct response to the expressed needs of carers & service users.
Throughout the writing of the booklet, carers & service users have been consulted and their ideas incorporated.
The aims of the staff here in Fife, especially those of Marjory, Stuart & Pauline, have been:
-
To provide a resource for carers
-
To promote a better understanding of voices
-
To help support the carer & service user-relationship and also
-
To encourage carers to address their own social, emotional and physical needs.
Understanding Voices has already reached corners of the world that others haven't reached. It is to form part of a distance learning pack used by the University of Wales. For more information on this, talk to Marjory or Stuart.
We would also like to see the booklet on the NSF(Scotland) website and there is one person, present here today, who will ensure that this happens as soon as possible.
Perhaps, most important of all Understanding Voices is designed to help and support the relatives and friends of those with hearing voices and I would refer you to the quotations on your invitation which record some of the outcomes of using this valuable booklet.
The publication has been a joint venture between the voluntary sector, statutory sector and above all carers & service users.
On behalf of the staff and members of NSF(Scotland),
I would like formally to thank
-
Psychiatrist, Dr Mary Stewart,
-
Psychologist, Gordon Mitchell,
-
Alison Stevenson from Fife Social Work
-
Lynda Sloane for her great efforts in desk top publishing
and last but not least
-
the carers & service users.
I now declare Understanding Voices - A guide for relatives and friends duly launched.
