The Third European Congress of EUFAMI was held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 8-10 October. Representatives from NSF(S) attended, including Vice Chairman Oksana Last and Val Eaglesham as the official representative. Chairman Susan Kirkwood attended in her capacity as EUFAMI Treasurer.
The main three topics for discussion were:
- best practice in the prevention and treatment of psychiatric disability
- self help and empowerment for people living with psychiatric illness
- fighting stigma and discrimination in mental illness.
Under the overall title 'The caring future.. starts now!' the conference consisted of a number of plenary sessions and parallel symposium workshops. Amongst the wide range of topics discussed were:
- current research on preventative interventions for children of parents with mental illness
- problems for a child growing up with a parent who has a mental illness
- key issues in the empowerment of carers and users
- building partnerships between professionals, carers and users
- best practice in the treatment and prevention of psychiatric disability
