WHAT SCHIZOPHRENIA IS NOT
SCHIZOPHRENIA IS NOT...
a multiple or split personality. People with schizophrenia are not Jekyll and Hyde. The split
which does occur is between reality as it is and reality as the person with schizophrenia sees it
or between their thinking and feeling.
SCHIZOPHRENIA IS NOT...
mental handicap or deficiency. People with schizophrenia are of normal intelligence and many
are bright people.
SCHIZOPHRENIA IS NOT...
necessarily dangerous. Most people with schizophrenia are no more violent than the average
person whilst those that are, often attract a lot of media attention.
SCHIZOPHRENIA IS NOT...
caused by the family or the way someone is brought up. Certain types of family environment or response
to the person with schizophrenia may affect the course of the illness.
